Somerset Schools Get Digital Cameras On School Buses

School bus companies have relied on cameras for years to keep an eye on students, but a new system for the Somerset Area School District is ramping up safety on the bus and on the road.

STA Bus Lines, which transports students in the district, has gone digital with a system it just started phasing in this year. The system consists of three cameras. One monitors students in the back of the bus; one monitors what’s going on out in the road and one monitors the driver.

Two weeks ago, it was put to the test when a car pulled out and started coming into the bus’ lane. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but administrators were able to review the video to see the incident for themselves.

“You could hear the horn blowing actually on the video itself,” said Superintendent Bryan Walker. “We were able to see exactly what happened in front of the bus, the students’ reaction and how calm the driver was.”
